These books are just what a little one needs when he is starting out. Yes these books are simple but that is what they are supposed to be. He has been making great practice and loves them. My little 4 year old had no interest in reading. He loves these the simple pictures and words in the set. We went from fighting to even read a story, to him getting them out himself to practice. This is a wonderful set of books for parents that want to give there little ones a boost in reading or the homeschooling mom that needs a start.
I love these books. They are written in a way that encourages reading and helps the child feel successful. My daughter started reading these books as soon as she she turned 4. My daughter loves reading the stories and even enjoys the pictures. As an elementary school teacher I recommend them. Of course I still read my daughter books by great authors but these books are for her to read and that's why they are so great.
We own 3 sets, but with my 3 readers, I have not used much of set 2 or 3. These books are not completely intriguing, but they are better than any other controlled vocab readers I have come across. Set 1 was invaluable, though. First, they are small and manageable, so they don't overwhelm the new reader. Second, they are a little funny and have made some attempt at humor with that very small controlled vocab. After set one, children are ready to try books that aren't vocab controlled, and enjoy reading. I highly recommend this product.
For example, after my son read the second book, I started pointing out "CAT" and "SAT" in other books, on signs, and in other locations. The simplicity of these books is what makes the reading accessible to him.
He has been reading them for three days now and has already worked through the third book. My son received Set 1 as a fourth birthday gift from my cousin, and exactly as the description says, these books gave my son the "aha" moment of decoding words for the first time.
The look of excitement on his face when he reads something more difficult than what he did just before is priceless. I am not pushing him at all- just encouraging him and exposing him to them for as much as he is willing each day.
He is so proud of himself. I recommend coupling these books with pointing out the same words in other locations.
That brought another "aha" moment, as he realized that he could connect what he learned in the BOB books to words in other locations.I think it is important not to overteach when using these books, or a child will miss making the discovery of phonetic connections on his/her own and move straight onto sight reading.
All the words are short and each book is short in lentgh, so it's not too overwhelming. I thought these would be a good addition in helping her learn. Our 5 year old kindergartener is just learning some site words. She is so excited about reading these and we were so amazed when she came up to us and literally read the book to us. Each book presents only a few sounds, i.e. the short "a", "s", etc. She felt so proud. They are fantastic.
